On May 6, 1989, women of Presbyterian congregations in Central Virginia gathered at Second Church in Richmond to establish Presbyterian Women of Presbytery of the James (PW-POJ). In the thirty years since, Presbyterian Women have been fulfilling our “reason for being.” We commit to

  • nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
  • support the mission of church worldwide,
  • work for justice and peace, and
  • build an inclusive, caring community that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

The Coordinating Team provides assistance in implementing this purpose by promoting communication among our churches and organizing annual gatherings. Contact Evalyn Page if you are interested in serving on the Coordinating Team. Available opportunities include secretary, area leaders, and search committee members.

Fall 2020 Gathering

Nov. 7

The Fall 2020 Gathering took place online via Zoom. The agenda featured comments from Dr. Lynn Miller, author of the Horizons Bible study, Into the Light. It also included news from Presbyterian Women at the national and synod levels and information about the mission offering recipient candidates for the Spring 2021 Gathering.

Virtual Bible Study

The 2020-2021 Horizons Bible Study, Into the Light: Finding Hope Through Prayers of Lament by Rev. Dr. Lynn Miller, is especially apt in today’s trying times. PW of the James is offering a virtual opportunity to gather and discuss the lessons of the study with leadership by Rev. Kelly Kaufman, parish associate at Olivet Church. Join monthly on second Tuesdays beginning November 10 or watch recorded sessions at your convenience. The first study will be held at 2 p.m. Subsequent meetings will occur at noon.

More than 100 PW-POJ members and friends representing 41 congregations attended the 30th Spring Gathering on May 4, 2019.  The day's mission offering of $2,567 was designated for Presbyterian Children's Home of The Highlands of Wytheville, Virginia.  Billy Rice, executive director of the Children's Home, gave the gathering's keynote mission address. The day also included greetings from Churchwide, Synod, and Presbytery leaders; the annual business meeting; 30th anniversary celebration lunch with birthday cake; the 2018 In Memoriam necrology; and closing worship with Holy Communion. We are grateful to the River Road Presbyterian congregation and staff members for graciously welcoming everyone with such warm hospitality.
